CHARLESTON, S.C. – Texas A&M women’s golf incoming freshman Bianca Fabrizio fell in the first round of match play Wednesday morning at the US Women’s Amateur Championship hosted by the Country Club of Charleston.
Fabrizio advanced to match play following a victory on the second hole of a playoff late Tuesday evening, moving on to face the championship’s stroke play victor, Yumi Matsubara of Japan.
“I was very proud of the fight that Bianca showed today,” Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. “Her first six holes were rocky and showed a little bit of nerves, but she got back on track as the round played out.”
The freshman-to-be struggled early in match play, trailing by three holes after a bogey on the par-5 fifth hole. The native of Italy attempted a rally late in the match besting Matsubara on the par-4 13th and the par-5 15th with a birdie at each hole. After her win at the 15th hole, Fabrizio trailed by two holes with three to play. The two competitors tied on both No. 16 and 17, ending Fabrizio’s run at the championship down two-holes with just the 18th remaining.
Fabrizio will soon join the rest of the Aggies in College Station for the 2013-14 season, which begins with the “Mo”Morial hosted by Texas A&M at the Traditions Golf Club Sept. 9-11.
