Expansion at Central Texas Veterans Cemetery

KILLEEN, Texas (AP) _ A Texas cemetery for military personnel and their families will be getting a nearly $5 million upgrade in an expansion project starting in February.

The Texas General Land Office on Monday announced renovation plans for the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.

The cemetery opened in 2006 and has more than 7,000 plots. The land previously was part of Fort Hood and donated by the federal government.

The cemetery will install concrete support sleeves for existing and future headstones. The state agency that oversees the Texas Veterans Land Board says the work will include adding 4,000 burial crypts.

The project using federal funds will also include repaving the cemetery’s memorial walkway in an overall upgrade expected to take about a year.
