ORLANDO, Fla. — Texas A&M standouts Mike Evans and Jake Matthews earned first-team All-America honors from the Walter Camp Football Foundation, the organization announced in conjunction with the Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday.
Evans, from Galveston, Texas, led the Aggies in receptions and receiving yards for the second straight year with 65 for 1,322 yards and 12 touchdowns. He broke the old record of 1,207 receiving yards set by Ryan Swope in 2011 and he matched the school record for touchdown catches originally set by Jeff Fuller in 2010. He led the SEC in receiving touchdowns, ranked No. 2 in receiving yards and was fourth in catches. His 20.3 yards per catch were tops in the SEC among receivers with 40 or more catches. He also matched the school single game record with four receiving touchdowns against Auburn. He broke the school record for receiving yards twice with 279 vs. Alabama and then 287 vs. Auburn, and he now owns two of the top five receiving efforts in SEC history.
Matthews, from Missouri City, Texas, is the team leader with 45 consecutive starts on the Aggies’ offensive front. The versatile Matthews held down the all-important left tackle position for the majority of 2013, but also made several starts at right tackle when injuries forced some lineup shuffling. With Matthews clearing the way, the Aggies led the SEC in passing offense, total offense and scoring offense. The Aggies go into the 2013 Chick-fil-A Bowl with 6,458 total yards, including 4,211 passing yards, and have scored 523 points.
