Emergency Preparedness Seminars in Brazos Valley

As hurricane season approaches, two free emergency seminars are available to anyone in the Brazos Valley.

Jennifer Wigington with the American Red Cross tells Melinda Schroeder for sister station Navasota News 1550 KWBC that this week’s mini institute for training is the first of its kind in the Brazos Valley.

Wigington says the first seminar will be Friday and Saturday, June 21 and 22, at the Brazos Valley Council of Governments building and focus on teaching volunteers how to help with local disasters, to set up shelters, to staff shelters, to interview clients and assess their needs, and to recognize mental health issues and logistics.

Grimes County Emergency Manager David Lilly says a second seminar will be offered next Saturday, June 29, in Anderson.

Lilly says it will focus on search and rescue and creating points of distribution, plus free emergency kits will be offered to attendees.

To register for the first seminar, call Wigington at 979-229-2616.

To register for the second seminar, call Lilly at 979-214-4592.
