Education Board Rejects Evolution Weaknesses

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ The State Board of Education has rejected an effort to require Texas science teachers to address weaknesses of scientific theories, including evolution.

Proposed new science standards would drop a requirement that both “strengths and weaknesses” of scientific theories be taught, but an amendment to retain the language failed Thursday.

A vote on new standards, which will be in place for the next decade, is expected later Thursday.

Critics say the requirement is used to undermine the theory of evolution in favor of religious teachings.

The standards also govern what appears on standardized tests and material published in textbooks.
