Dr. Jeff Guin Named Associate Athletics Director for Academics

COLLEGE STATION—Dr. Jeff Guin (GYOO-in) was named the Associate Athletics Director for Academics at Texas A&M University, Aggie Director of Athletics Eric Hyman announced Friday.

“We are extremely pleased to have Jeff join our administrative team and help lead our academic efforts at Texas A&M University,” Hyman said. “We have made tremendous strides as our overall grade-point average was close to a 3.0 for our Aggie student-athletes. Jeff’s leadership, background and experience will help us as we continue to improve in this very important phase of student-athlete welfare.”

Dr. Guin comes to Aggieland from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where he served as Associate Athletics Director for Student Support Services the past two years.

“I am excited to get started at Texas A&M,” Guin said. “I have been impressed by the accomplishments of the Texas A&M athletics program and the overall University, but I am more impressed by the young people I have had the opportunity to meet thus far. I know we can accomplish great things together here in Aggieland.”

Prior to his service in Birmingham, Guin was a member of the academic support staff at the University of Illinois for five years (2008-13) and worked with the Illini football team for two years (2012-13).

He earned his doctorate in education at Illinois in May of 2015. His dissertation was titled “Decision-Making on Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Expansion.”

Before his time at Illinois, Guin served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Florida Atlantic University (2007) and worked as an assistant basketball coach at Western Illinois from 2003-06.

Prior to his coaching days, Guin served in an administrative role with the University of Illinois men’s basketball program from 1997 until 2003. He helped Illinois to five NCAA Tournament appearances under coaches Lon Kruger and Bill Self, and helped the Illini earn three Big 10 titles and a Big 10 Tournament title in 2003.

Guin earned three degrees from the University of Florida, a bachelor’s degree in education in 1995, a master’s in education in 1996, and a master’s degree in sports management in 1997 while also serving as a student manager for the Florida Gator basketball program. He worked under Coach Kruger (1993-96) as well as Billy Donovan (1996-97). With Kruger, Guin was part of the squad that reached the Final Four in 1994 and an NCAA Tournament berth in 1995.

Before enrolling at Florida, Guin was an Academic All-America NJCAA Region 8 honoree in 1992 and 1993 playing for Okaloosa-Walton Community College in Niceville, Fla.

A native of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Guin is married to Betsy and the couple has three children—twins Ellee and Troy, and Luke.
