DPS Director Resigns Amid Complaints

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ The director of the Texas Department of Public Safety has resigned after complaints of sexual harassment and unprofessional conduct.

DPS said in a news release that Col. Stanley E. Clark resigned as director effective at 5 p.m. today and will retire at the end of the month.

Clark, 60, has been with the agency for 36 years and took over the top spot in September.

The chairman of the Texas Public Safety Commission, Allan B. Polunsky, indicated disappointment in the matter.

The resignation comes after a DPS manager complained on April 29 in an e-mail to superiors that Clark had blown kisses to some workers and had inappropriately hugged, touched and kissed them.

Clark took over after Col. Tommy Davis retired amid intense criticism of the agency over a June fire that severely damaged the historic Governor’s Mansion.

DPS plans to meet later this week to appoint an interim director.
