Dewhurst Wants ‘Sanctuary Cities’ in Special Session

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst has recommended adding a controversial immigration enforcement bill to the call of a special session.

Gov. Rick Perry sets the agenda for a special session.

In a letter to Perry, Dewhurst said it should include the so-called “sanctuary cities” bill, congressional redistricting, windstorm insurance, Medicaid savings and several other issues along with school finance.

Dewhurst also said he sees no other choice than to operate the Senate under “simple majority vote.”

Democrats have been able to block the sanctuary cities bill under normal Senate rules, but wouldn’t have the numbers to stop it in a special session.

Dewhurst drew fire from tea party conservatives last week for allegedly killing a Senate bill that would have banned controversial TSA body searches at Texas airports.
