Dewhurst Targeted in Texas Senate Debate

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst found himself under steady attack from former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz in the first formal debate between Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate.

Cruz questioned Dewhurst’s conservatism while former ESPN commentator Craig James and small businessman Glenn Addison urged voters not to send a career politician to Washington.

Former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert called on voters to ignore candidates with fancy speeches and to elect someone who will get things done.

All of the candidates attacked President Barack Obama’s policies and promised to change Washington. The debate was centered on who was the true conservative.

The conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation hosted the event on Thursday night in Austin. A legal challenge to the state’s political maps has delayed the Texas primary elections.
