The ink is dry on the contract extension for Texas A&M University System chancellor John Sharp.

Total compensation doubles for Sharp from $657,300 to $1.3 million dollars a year.

According to figures from the A&M System, that moves Sharp past Texas Tech and Houston to second among his in-state peers…behind UT chancellor William McRaven.

Sharp’s base salary rises from $507,300 to $900,000 and his deferred compensation increases from $150,000 to $200,000 a year. The new contract adds an annual retention bonus of $200,000 after he passes his anniversary date.

Starting his fifth year as chancellor, Sharp agreed to a five year extension. None of his 13 predecessors have held the post for ten years. The longest to serve was Jack Williams, who stepped down in 1979 after eight years and four months. Unless Sharp or the board of regents gives written notice in 2019, the contract has an automatic rollover through 2025.
