CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) _ A judge in Corpus Christi today dismissed one of 23 counts against a businessman and Democratic donor accused of impersonating a lawyer.
Mauricio Celis is the founder of CGT Law Group International.
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports the judge threw out a count that was based on a business letterhead listing Celis as an attorney licensed in Mexico. The judge said the letterhead was blank.
The prosecution rested today after calling 20 witnesses.
Prosecutors had called legal experts who testified that anyone who wants to be an attorney in Mexico needs to get a law degree and proof of registration.
The first defense witness was attorney Jose “Pepe” Valenzuela Hernandez of Chihuahua, Mexico. He testified no one needs the registration to practice labor, agrarian, criminal and amparo law in Mexico.
