CVB Changes Follow College Station Internal Audit

Over $1 million dollars a year is given to the local convention and visitors bureau through College Station’s hotel-motel bed tax fund.

An internal audit by the city raised questions that were addressed at the last city council meeting.

Newly elected councilman Karl Mooney is on the audit committee and is a city representative to the CVB board.

CVB Director Shannon Overby told councilwoman Julie Schultz they did not have itemized expense reports sought by the city, one of the faults found in the audit.

Internal Auditor Ty Elliott told the council the risk for fraud, waste, or abuse existed at the CVB.

The report stated the city has been misinformed about the true economic impact the CVB provides and there were management problems including a lack of financial oversight and examples of wasteful spending.

Multiple times during the council meeting, CVB director Shannon Overby says corrective action has already started. For instance, a new policy has been drafted on financial matters and will be seen by the council next week.

Overby says the more difficult issue will be determining the agency’s value to the city.

Since the audit, the CVB board has drafted new policies that will be presented at the September 8th council meeting and will be voted on by the CVB board September 14th.
