Monday was the first day of operating College Station’s newest fire station.
The first call for the crew at Station 6, located at University and Tarrow, was 30 minutes after the first shift started. Fire department spokesman Bart Humphreys says a citizen reported a structure fire at Towerpoint Shopping Center but there was no fire.
Humphreys says the idea for a northside station was born in 2000. A $7 million dollar bond issue was passed by 74 percent of voters in 2008. Construction began in September of 2011 and was completed last week on time and on budget.
18 additional employees were hired. There is a staff of seven on duty at all times. A fire engine and ambulance are currently housed. Humphreys says as time allows more firefighters and a ladder truck will be added.
An open house will be held Saturday, December 15 at 11 a.m.
