CS Council Wants More Done With Former Chimney Hill Property

Purchased several years ago as the site of a College Station convention center, a majority of the city council wants to do something now with the mostly vacant space that is the Chimney Hill shopping center.

Mayor Nancy Berry says whether the city keeps or demolishes the retail area, there will be a cost to deal with asbestos and mold.

While a limited amount of space is being leased, City Manager David Neeley says enough revenue is being generated to cover debt service costs.

But a council majority was interested in more renters.  Councilwoman Blanche Brick says the space should not be given away.

The council was told they would be considering at their next meeting a contract to control asbestos. City Manager David Neeley says that’s a main problem in the largest building at Chimney Hill along with roof leaks and problems with its air conditioning system.
