The council will conduct four days of budget workshops August 16-17 and August 20-21, followed by a public hearing on August 23. Final adoption of the budget and tax rate is set for September 13.

The proposed property tax rate is 43.0687 cents, a decrease of .7308 cents.

The proposal also calls for no increases in electric, water, drainage, or sanitation rates. Wastewater rates would rise five percent, which amounts to a couple dollars a month for residential customers.

The council is being asked to add eight employees to the police department.  Seven employees (one sergeant and six officers) with associated vehicles and equipment would be directed to the Northgate area at a cost of  $895,681 to address crime and traffic congestion in the entertainment district.  The eighth person would be an assistant to work with detectives, at a cost of $62,423.

City employees would be eligible for a 2.5 percent performance-based pay increase and funding would continue for the police department’s step plan.
