CS Council Interested in New Natatorium

The College Station city council will be following what the CSISD school board eventually does with a proposal to build a new natatorium.

The school board has yet to decide if they will let voters consider a $28 to $32 million dollar bond issue for a 50 meter by 25 yard pool.

With that in mind, Superintendent Eddie Coulson asked if the council would split what could be a yearly operational deficit of $300,000 dollars.

Councilman Karl Mooney says bringing competitive swimming to town was just one benefit of a larger pool.

One member of the council who isn’t on board is Jess Fields. He described a new natatorum as “exceptionally irresponsible” after hearing the estimated operational cost and the school district has had two years of budget deficits.

Comments from Jess Fields.

Coulson’s response to Fields was the recommendation was from a community committee and it was the school board’s responsibility to conduct due diligence on the proposal.

No action was taken by the council, and there are plans for a joint meeting with the school board.
