CS Council Delays Proposed Rental Registration Changes

The College Station City Council voted unanimously to table changes to regulations on rental housing until their next meeting.

That came after after nearly an hour of discussion and 30 minutes of public comments from ten speakers.

Resident Hugh Lindsay says he’s encountered multiple issues dealing with existing regulations, including a citation for not registering his longtime residence.

 

Realtor and resident Sarah Norman says that more education and communication is needed.

 

Planning and Development director Lance Simms says he modeled penalties after language in the city parking code and set a fine of 500 dollars, the state maximum.

 

Commenting on privacy concerns, assistant city attorney Carla Robinson says the city needs the ability to require lease information to prosecute violations. Councilman James Benham suggested requiring an addendum for all leases to protect sensitive information.

 

The council voted unanimously to delay action until they meet again on June 26th, stating they would like to have changes in place in time for the new school year.
