CS Council Approves New Housing Restrictions In The City’s Last Black Neighborhood

The College Station city council was applauded Thursday night by a large crowd after its unanimous vote to ban new multi-story rental housing in their neighborhood.

Residents of the McCulloch subdivision told the council they wanted to save College Station’s last black neighborhood.

10 of 11 public speakers wanted to block what has been nicknamed “Aggie Shacks” in the area south of the Lincoln Recreation Center that’s bordered by Holleman, Welsh, Oney Hervey, and Nevada.

Approximately 80 of the 139 homes are owner-occupied. All but ten of the homes are single story, and eight of the ten were recently built.

Nearly 60 percent of the property owners signed a petition to create what is technically called a neighborhood conservation overlay.

New construction will be limited to one-story, single family homes, with a maximum 41% lot coverage for homes and associated parking.
