Almost a year has passed since a Bryan man’s arrest for threatening to cut off a woman’s fingers and pointing a gun at her. 40 year old Joe Marin the Third was scheduled for a jury trial this week in Brazos County District Court. Instead, the son of a former Bryan councilman entered pleas to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a weapon. District Judge Travis Bryan sentenced Marin to 18 years. Punishment for all three crimes will be served at the same time. Marin was considered a habitual offender due to prior convictions for evading arrest and cocaine possession.
Pouring gasoline and setting fire to a home and a vehicle in north Bryan on Father’s Day two years ago means prison time. 49 year old Jerry Lee Thayer, convicted of the twin arsons, was caught in March 2009 following a manhunt in the U.S. and Mexico. Thayer was sentenced by Brazos County District Judge Travis Bryan to ten years for each arson. Both sentences will be served at the same time. But the clock won’t start until Thayer completes the remainder of a sentence for robbery in Nevada.
A College Station man convicted of aggravated robbery from one convenience store and trying to hit a second is headed to prison. 21 year old Weston Mitchell was picked up the week after the February 28th incidents at neighboring stores in the area of Wellborn and Rock Prairie. Investigators learned Mitchell first went into the Tigerland Express, where the clerk recognized him as a frequent customer even though he was covering his face with a bandana. Mitchell was told to take off his bandana, which he did, then he bought some candy, then left. Moments later at the Max Express the clerk said Mitchell threatened him with what looked like to be an ice pick. Mitchell left with an undisclosed amount of cash. Brazos County District Judge Travis Bryan sentenced Mitchell to six years for the Max Express robbery and two years for the attempted robbery at Tigerland Express. Both will be served at the same time.
