WACO, Texas (AP) _ The former Texas pastor says he’ll appeal his 65-year prison sentence for killing his wife and trying to portray it as a suicide.
One of Matt Baker’s trial attorneys filed a notice of appeal earlier this week in Waco. Then the judge appointed Baker a new attorney, Stan Schwieger, who said a motion for a new trial with the Waco judge can be filed within 30 days of last week’s sentencing.
If Baker opts against that, Schwieger says he’ll file an appeal with the 10th Texas Court of Appeals in Waco.
Baker’s trial attorneys, Guy James Gray and Harold Danford, withdrew from representing Baker last week after the sentencing.
Baker, a former Baptist pastor at several Waco-area churches, maintains his innocence in his wife Kari’s 2006 death.
