A&M Consolidated’s Rick German to retire

Rick German is retiring after 32 years of coaching.

German has been the head boys basketball coach at A&M Consolidated the last six seasons. His Tigers went 19-13 this year, falling in the bi-district playoffs to Waco University 80-76.

“When I first came, it was the last two years of the single school and that second year was when Alex [Caruso] was a senior,” German said. “That team was very good, very fun to coach and they put it all together well. I couldn’t ask for much more than what they gave me.”

In his 22-year head coaching career, German was 333-360.

“In some of the highlights of my career, we weren’t that good as a basketball team, but I had some really exceptional kids playing as hard as they could play,” German said. “As a coach, that’s all you could ask for. If you don’t win that game or don’t make the playoffs, you still look at those kids and you smile and say ‘Hey, guys, we did the best we could do. That’s all we can ask for from each other. Let’s go have a pizza.”

German also coached at Dallardsville Big Sandy, Texarkana Pleasant Grove, Olney and Aldine MacArthur for nine years. He coached at Livingston before moving to Consol to direct the Tigers.
