A&M Consolidated Volleyball Team Advances to Area Playoffs

MAGNOLIA — As poorly as the A&M Consolidated volleyball team played in the first game of its bi-district playoff match — and it was bad — coach Cydryce McMillian took comfort in the knowledge that the Lady Tigers could play better.

Much better.

Consol shook off a sluggish start, rallying for a 15-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-21 victory over Klein Oak at the Magnolia West gym on Tuesday night.

The Lady Tigers (31-10) earned a berth in the Class 5A Region II area round. Consol will play fourth-ranked Round Rock (33-7) in Rockdale at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Klein Oak, the second seed from District 13-5A, finished the season at 25-11.

Consol had climbed to sixth in the state rankings before slipping to finish third in 14-5A. The Lady Tigers didn’t appear to have righted the ship during the first game against the fired-up Lady Panthers. But Consol got back on course with a 9-0 run early in Game 2 and surged through the last three games.

“It didn’t look good in Game 1, but I knew we had the potential to get better,” McMillian said. “We were uncharacteristic in the first game. I talked to the girls about keeping it simple and sticking to what we do in practice. They started passing the ball better, and we were blocking better. It was a dramatic change mentally.”

Outside hitter Ashlynn Ford and middle blocker Kaycey Cermin, a pair of seniors, both played major roles in the turnaround. Ford delivered 17 of her match-high 21 kills during the last three games. Cermin powered the 9-0 run with three blocks and two kills.

“Everybody has their off [games], but good teams come back from that and they know how to finish matches out,” Ford said. “Everybody knew what they needed to do, and they started doing their part.”

The comeback also hinged on contributions from juniors Carly Hicks and Mindy Hudspeth that might have surprised Klein Oak. Hicks and Hudspeth started the season on the JV when Consol swept the Lady Panthers in late August.

Both juniors produced big-time in their first playoff match. Hicks provided another target for the Consol setters, finishing with nine kills. Hudspeth had two solo blocks and was in on a couple of combo blocks, adding three kills.

“We started them on the JV to build their confidence and build their skill level,” McMillian said. “I know it was hard for them, but the playing time they got, the confidence they built and the pressure situations that they were in — instead of sitting on our bench — it makes a difference.

“Mindy’s a great block for us. She’s huge on the right side. Carly was on fire from the outside. You could just see the passion in her eyes and how much she wants it. She has something to prove, and I think that’s because she did start the year on the JV.”

Klein Oak had a chance to put Consol in a deep hole when the Lady Panthers pulled within 21-19 in Game 2. However, Hicks and Ford came up with kills and Klein Oak made a couple of errors to help the Lady Tigers get even.

The Lady Tigers also pulled away late in Game 3, taking four of the last five points as Ford had two kills and Cermin and Hudspeth teamed up on a block.

In the final game, the Lady Panthers crept within 21-18, but senior middle blocker Emily Caruso produced a block and Ford delivered the last three points with kills.

Setters Caitlin Williams and Haley Slocum dished out 24 assists each for Consol. Senior Jordan Dickson led the Lady Tigers with 18 digs and added six kills. Libero Ebonee Smith made 14 digs and Ford had 13.
