A jogger and a yearbook photo leads College Station Police to identifying and making an arrest in the capital murder of an elderly man.

According to the arrest report, 18 year old Gabriel Hall of College Station told detectives he shot and stabbed 68 year old Edwin Shaar, Jr. and stabbed Shaar’s wife Linda. The husband was found dead in the garage of their Deacon Drive home.  The wife, found inside the home sitting in her wheelchair with a stab wound to her neck, is hospitalized following surgery.

The arrest report states Hall is accused of committing a burglary at the Shaar’s home late Thursday afternoon. The dispatcher who took the 9-1-1 call heard screaming and banging sounds in the background.

Later in the evening, following publicity of the possible identification of the suspect, a witness contacted police to report while he was jogging in Brother’s Pond Park he saw someone he recognized as a student at Consolidated High School on the same trail about 50 yards from Deacon Drive. The witness was given last year’s Consol yearbook and he picked out Hall’s picture.

Before Hall’s confession, he agreed to provide samples of his DNA and fingerprints. According to the arrest report, detectives were not able to get Hall’s fingerprints because there was super glue on his fingertips.

While the arrest report notes Hall’s confession, there’s no information as to why Hall chose the Shaar’s home for a burglary and what led him to attack the couple.

Hall was transported to the Brazos County Jail Saturday morning, where is he being held without bond.
