Comptroller Combs Raises $1 Million for 2012 Campaign

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Texas Comptroller Susan Combs says she’s raised $1.1 million in campaign money in the final quarter of 2011.

The big haul comes two years before she the next election for comptroller, but could position her to run for lieutenant governor should David Dewhurst win his race for the U.S. Senate in November.

Combs has demurred on whether or not she plans to run for the second-highest position in Texas, but she is widely expected to join the race. Combs reported Thursday that she has more than $6 million on hand for whatever position she runs for next.

The announcement appeared intended to let potential competitors know she would be a formidable opponent.

Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson has also indicated he’s interested in running for lieutenant governor.
