A toddler found wandering the street Tuesday evening led to the arrest of a College Station woman on charges of child abandonment.
Staff at an apartment on Harvey Mitchell Parkway near Wellborn found the two-year-old and got him out of harm’s way before calling police.
Officer Rhonda Seaton says Datashia Franklin, 18, told police that she had only left her cousin’s son alone at the apartment for a few minutes to visit a computer lab and that she had checked on the child about every five minutes while she was away.
However, police inspection of surveillance cameras showed Franklin at the lab for two hours without leaving.
Seaton says the child was safe, but it was evident that he had dressed himself before going outside, as both his legs were in the same pant leg.
She says his diaper was extremely dirty, and he was incredibly fortunate that a car did not hit him.
