21 year old Makela Holmes denied striking the girl. Then she told the officer if the girl got hurt…quoting the arrest report…”it was because she put herself in with the adults.”
An independent third party witnessed the girl being struck, causing the girl to fall down and injure her foot.
Holmes remained in jail Tuesday morning in lieu of a $75,000 dollar bond on the charge of injury to a child.
The College Station city council at its December meeting awarded a $1.3 million dollar contract to replace artificial turf on two soccer fields at Veterans Park. The old turf was installed 12 years ago and exceeded its life expectancy of eight to ten years. Funding comes from hotel occupancy tax money. City manager Bryan Woods said some of the 200,000 square feet of turf that is being removed will be used at batting cages and at the College Station police department’s shooting range. Parks and recreation director Kelsey Heiden said the turf contains materials to keep it cool by an average of between 10 and 20 degrees. The Brazos County jail reported 43 bookings on New Year’s Eve and early New Year’s morning. One third of the bookings were for either DWI or public intoxication. Among 10 DWI arrests was a Texas A&M police officer seeing a wrong way driver on University in the Northgate district on New Year’s Eve just before 11 p.m. The UPD arrest report says the driver had breath alcohol samples that were more than twice the legal limit at .196 and .190. 26 year old Marissa Rothermel of Enumclaw Washington, who was arrested for DWI with one prior conviction, remained jail as of January 1 in lieu of a $5,000 dollar bond. One of three public intoxication arrests was in Bryan. 11 minutes into the new year a Bryan police officer spots a pickup stopped in the center turn lane of Highway 21 get hit by another vehicle. That’s followed by several people running away from the truck. One of the people who ran away, who was a passenger in the truck, was arrested for public intoxication with three prior convictions in the last two years. The arrest report says the passenger tried to jump out while the truck was still moving, causing the driver to stop. 25 year old Julio Ocampo of Bryan remained jailed as of January 1 in lieu of a $2,000 dollar bond.
Bryan ISD school board members heard at their last meeting before Christmas break, from the president of Bryan High’s Viking athletic booster club. Marc Garrett, who is the father of a freshman student athlete, called on the board to give more support to BISD athletic programs. Garrett says boys in the class of 2028 football and basketball teams have not won a game since they were seventh graders. He told the board “How do you turn that around? It’s a long process. I don’t know that it will benefit my kid’s class. But I would like to see the class of ’29 or the class of ’30 be made a priority.” Garrett also said “I’m not a lone ranger. I’ve talked to a lot of families out there. And if you (board members) had any idea how many families are considering leaving this district.” Because Garrett spoke during public comments, board members could not respond.
