College Station school district administrators have been given more questions from the school board on the idea of random drug testing of students.
During the board’s Tuesday workshop, president Jeff Harris asked what percentage of CSISD’s 4,000 seventh through twelfth graders should be tested for the program to be an effective deterrent.
Chief administrative officer Greg McIntyre says effectiveness depends on the school’s culture.
Superintendent Clark Ealy was asked if sponsors of extracurricular activities have given their opinion. Dr. Ealy said that would be done, which comes after coaches completed a significant rewrite of their athletic handbooks, which deals with being under the influence and possession.
Other unresolved issues are what substances will be tested, consequences for students who fail, and an appeals process.
The proposal, as being discussed, would apply to CSISD seventh through 12th grade students in extracurricular activities, students who have parking passes, and students whose parents voluntarily ask the district to place their children in the group.
