The College Station police department goes to social media of a new state law affecting motorists who have a disabled veterans (DV) license plate who park in handicapped spaces.

Officer Tristen Lopez says as of January 1, vehicles with a DV plate can park in a handicapped space with a disabled parking placard or a DV plate that includes a wheelchair image, which is officially known as the International Symbol of Access.

Lopez says CSPD officers will have an undefined grace period to educate drivers about the new state law.

The change is the result of Senate Bill 792. Quoting CSPD tweets, “Currently (before January 1, 2022) any person with a disabled veteran license plate may utilize handicapped parking regardless of whether or not they are mobility impaired. Organizations such as the Paralyzed Veterans of America and Disabled American Veterans have asked for this to be changed as it has often led to a lack of handicapped parking, especially at Veterans Administration facilities.”
