College Station Police Answers WTAW Listener Questions About Banners Over The Freeway

WTAW listeners have asked about a group of people who displayed a banner over the freeway on the University bridge last Friday afternoon.

College Station police officer Tristan Lopez says 9-1-1 received multiple calls of between eight to ten people attempting to hang the banner.

The calls, from passing motorists, expressed concerns that the sign could cause a crash.

Lopez says when an officer arrived about 25 minutes later, they saw the group standing on the sidewalk and they were not impeding traffic.

Regarding sign regulations, Lopez tells WTAW News that signs can be held, but cannot be attached or affixed to anything.

The hanging and/or attaching of banners on state highways is regulated, and requires approval by TxDOT.

Lopez says CSPD’s concern would be for any action which pose a safety hazard, such as obstructing traffic or items being dropped or thrown into and/or onto traffic.

And that concern played out last Friday, when another CSPD officer checked out a call that a cap or a glove may have fallen from the bridge to the freeway. Nothing was found.

The group, displaying a banner that read “Impeach Trump”, was in the area for about one hour.
