The city of San Antonio is working on a water project that caught the attention of local water services.

The San Antonio City Council approved a contract last October with a joint venture named Vista Ridge to supply water from an aquifer in Burleson County.

Water Services Director Dave Coleman said the city of College Station relies on the Simsboro aquifer for 99% of their drinking water, and they are paying close attention to the project.

“We want that aquifer to remain a reliable water supply in perpetuity,” said Coleman.

He said everything Vista Ridge and the city of San Antonio are doing is perfectly within state law.

“In the state of Texas, groundwater is private property. If you own a piece of property, you own the groundwater that’s under your property, you have every right to sell that,” he said.

Coleman said they will continue to track the project to ensure the groundwater districts implement cutbacks if the water drawdown reaches its trigger limits.
