Two crews of College Station firefighters rotated in and out of subfreezing temperatures battling a house fire Monday afternoon.
Spokesman Bart Humphreys says investigators are determining what happened at 113 Sterling, off Texas south of Harvey Road.
Humphreys says a passerby alerted 9-1-1. The first crews arrived two minutes later and reported heavy smoke and fire. It took 30 minutes to get the fire under control.
Humphreys says the family of four was not home at the time, no firefighters were hurt, and no neighboring homes were threatened.
As for the cold temperatures, you’re reminded about fire safety precautions. Humphreys says don’t use ovens and cooktops to generate heat, and have proper ventilation when using other fuel sources for heat. And if you use a space heater, keep it at least three feet from anything combustible.
