College Station Cutting 27 Positions, 11 Laid Off Wednesday, One Office Eliminated

The city of College Station announced Wednesday it was eliminating 27 full-time and part-time positions at a savings of $1.5 million for the city.

The cuts include 11 currently filled positions, 13 currently vacant job openings, and three through retirement or reassignment.

City Manager David Neeley says the 11 laid off were placed on administrative leave with pay and benefits that will continue through September 30th.  Neeley says five or six could be rehired to fill current vacancies.

11 departments were reorganized.  The Economic and Community Development Office was eliminated, sending two remaining employees to other departments.  Director David Gwin was among the four laid off.

David Neeley comments about what he told employees.

David Neeley says the financial picture a year from now doesn’t look any better.
