College Station Council Awards Construction Contract For Library Expansion And Renovation

This November marks ten years since voters in College Station approved a bond issue where two major projects were recently completed, and a third will start next month.

The city council at this week’s meeting awarded a $6.07 million dollar contract to nearly double the size of the Larry J. Ringer library.

Public Works director Donald Harmon gave the council the timeline of what’s happened since voters approved the library expansion in a 2008 bond issue.

Councilman James Benham noted the delay in expanding the library and Lincoln Recreation Center and building the new Lick Creek Park nature center were due to the recession that followed the 2008 bond issue.

Branch manager Jessica Jones, on WTAW’s The Infomaniacs, says the existing 16 thousand square foot building will be renovated along with adding 12 thousand square feet. Among other things, there will be more room for children’s programs and the growing number of people looking for a quiet space.

The council was told construction is expected to take 15 months, weather permitting.
