College Station Council Approves $95,000 Analysis of City Software

How do you provide computer service to 14 divisions of one company?

That’s been the challenge for the city of College Station.

The city council has approved spending nearly $100,000 for a third party to analyze the city’s financial and management software, then recommend alternatives.

It’s the first step towards changing the city’s computer software system, which City IT director Ben Roper says it could take a total of three to five years at an expense of several million dollars.

Roper says the city currently uses software that was installed 24 years ago, and he stresses that both the city and its needs have changed in that period of time.

He says the challenge is that each of the city’s business units has unique needs, and the old software is detrimental to functioning as a cohesive organization, taking care of daily operations, and passing data back and forth.
