The College Station city council on Thursday bid farewell to city secretary Sherry Mashburn, who is retiring after seven years in College Station and 24 years in city government.
After the council gave Mashburn a standing ovation, the governing body voted unanimously to promote deputy city secretary Tanya McNutt.
McNutt, who has been deputy the last ten years, came to College Station after serving as city secretary in Madisonville between 1999 and 2008.
McNutt was one of three finalists from an applicant pool of more than 80 candidates.

News release from the city of College Station:
Tanya McNutt will be College Station’s next city secretary.
McNutt, who has served as College Station’s deputy city secretary since 2008, was announced Thursday as the council’s newest appointee and will assume her new role on Monday, July 31.
McNutt replaces Sherry Mashburn, who retires Monday after being with College Station since August 2010. Mashburn’s career in city government spans 24 years — the last seven being with College Station.
“I’m ready for this opportunity because of Sherry Mashburn,” McNutt said. “She believed in me from the moment she came to College Station and, under her guidance, I’ve learned the immense responsibilities required of College Station’s city secretary. It will be an honor to build upon the professionalism and reliability already in place.”
McNutt served as city secretary in Madisonville (1999-2008) before her career brought her to College Station. She has been involved in all aspects of her department’s operations, including planning and conducting elections for the city. McNutt also recently completed the rigorous Certified Municipal Clerk Program through the Texas Municipal Clerk Association.
The in-house process to replace Mashburn began in early April and attracted 80+ applicants that was narrowed to three finalists.
“With unanimous support from the College Station City Council, Tanya was selected to succeed Sherry as our next city secretary,” Mayor Karl Mooney said. “My fellow council members and I are looking forward to Tanya’s leadership and continued development as she and her staff meet the challenges of our growing city.”
