College Station City Council Endorses Proposed Regional Mobility Authority

The College Station city council has unaminously voted to support the creation of a new government entity intended to bring more money to lessen traffic congestion in Brazos County.

The retired director of the Texas Transportation Institute, Dennis Christiansen, is among the members of an informal committee that has been working the past year laying the groundwork for what’s called a regional mobility authority (RMA).

Christiansen says traffic in Brazos County is now where Austin was 25 years ago.

Consultant Doug Bramwell, Senior Vice President of Jones|Carter Engineering, says the RMA would give Brazos County a separate identity as the only urban county in the ten county Bryan based TxDOT district.

The RMA would not have the authority to levy taxes, but would have the power of eminent domain. And the RMA could build toll roads.

The College Station council unanimously voted to support the RMA with a letter to the county commission.

The proposal has yet to be considered by the Bryan city council.

If the county approves, then it goes before the Texas Transportation Commission.
