College Station City Council Awaits Park Board Recommendations On Naming New Fields At Veterans Park

The College Station city council is anxiously waiting for the next meeting of the parks and recreation board.

That’s after an update was given at the last meeting on naming two new fields under construction at Veterans Park.

Parks and Recreation director David Schmitz says the board has not met since councilwoman Linda Harvell suggested the name of Legion Field to reflect next year’s centennial of the American Legion.

No one on the council was opposed to that idea. And no one was opposed to a suggestion from councilman Jerome Rektorik to add the name of George H.W. Bush at Veterans Park.

Schmitz says as part of a Veterans Park master plan in the year 2000, names were given to the fields being built as Minuteman and Medic.

Schmitz says construction of the new multipurpose fields are expected to be completed next spring.

The next meeting of the parks board is January 8 at 6 p.m. at the Lick Creek Park nature center.
