College Station City Council Approves Change In Comprehensive Plan For Commercial Land Use In Wellborn Neighborhood

This April marks eight years since the College Station city council approved the highly opposed annexation of the Wellborn area.

Last Thursday, the council approved changing the comprehensive plan to allow commercial development on more than seven acres of land along the west side Wellborn Road south of Barron Cut Off.

City planner Jade Broadnax says the commercial land use were specifically crafted to the Wellborn area. Restrictions include buildings no taller than two stories and maximum square footage for restaurants and retail businesses.

Councilman Dennis Maloney, who voted for the annexation in 2011, called for widespread notification when zoning changes are proposed.

There was also discussion about the developer’s share of the cost of extending city utilities as part future rezoning.
