The College Station city council went beyond staff recommendations for what will be $2 million dollars of additions and repairs at Veterans Park.

The council followed a unanimous vote to award a construction contract by unanimously voting against a staff recommendation to delete two playgrounds and shade canopies due a lack of money.

Councilmen Dennis Maloney and John Crompton said hotel occupancy tax money can make up the difference.

Construction starts next month and weather permitting, will be completed next spring.

The contract replaces three roundabouts, adds sidewalks between grass fields, addresses drainage issues around grass fields, and builds a restroom building on the Harvey Road side of the park.
