College Station City Council Adding Overhead Cover To Lick Creek Park Amphitheater

A year since the grand opening of College Station’s Lick Creek Park nature center, which was approved by voters in a bond issue ten years ago, will be a six figure addition not included in the original bond issue.

There was considerable discussion at the city council’s last meeting before the unanimous approval of a $139,000 dollar overhead shade screen to protect those inside the 250 seat amphitheater.

The final vote followed a motion that was made and later withdrawn by councilman James Benham to delay the purchase of the overhead screen until learning if anything else was going to be added.

Before Benham withdrew his motion, Mayor Karl Mooney was among those opposing a delay.

Benham withdrew his motion after learning it could have jeopardized the bid because of the time it would take to complete the study.

The council previously approved adding $200,000 dollars in this year’s budget for the overhead screen.

Construction might take three to four months to complete, depending on the availability of the steel and iron to support the screen.
