More dirt will be turning soon at College Station’s Fun For All playground for visitors with special needs.

That’s after the city council awarded a construction contract at Thursday night’s meeting.

Phase two also includes the John David and Carolyn Crow memorial field, which is a one-fourth scale artificial surface field with bleachers and a field.

There are also two wheelchair accessible merry go rounds and a sensory panel maze containing bright colors.

To pay for the $1.8 million dollar addition, parks and recreation director David Schmitz says there is $800,000 in the bank from contributors and an anonymous donor is adding $500,000.

The council approved staff’s recommendation to spend up to $546,000 dollars from the parkland dedication fund from savings in prior projects.

That led to one resident, Mike Lee, questioning why the city wasn’t spending parkland dedication money on other parks.

Assistant public works director Emily Fisher said construction is scheduled to take 270 days. Fisher also pointed out the timeline could change depending on the time to complete the stadium and any weather delays.

Schmitz says this phase will not include additional parking, something that was done with the first phase and something that is planned in the playground’s third phase.
