Happy birthday College Station!
The city turns 78 years-old this week.
Mike Neu, External Relations Manager, said on October 19, 1938, citizens voted to incorporate the city. The vote was 217-39 in favor.
Neu said four months later, in February of 1939, the first city council meeting was held. At the time, the city’s population was around 2,000.
“Today we are over 109,000. That is an incredible leap, College Station has grown immensely,” said Neu.
Even with the rapid growth, Neu said preserving the city’s history is important.
“We have an online library database where we capture and archive images and documents. We have an ongoing luncheon where we provide lectures from historians on campus to amateur historians in the community to tell stories about College Station,” said Neu.
