Coach Jimbo Fisher to be inducted into Samford Athletics Hall of Fame

Birmingham, Ala.— Texas A&M head football coach Jimbo Fisher will be inducted into the Samford University Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2018 this weekend in Birmingham, Alabama.

Fisher was a record-setting quarterback for Samford in 1987, turning in one of the most impressive seasons in school history. Fisher passed for a school record 2,394 yards and set school single-season records for total offense (2,631 yards) and touchdown passes (34). He set the school mark for touchdowns in a game with six on two different occasions. At the end of the 1987 season, Fisher was named the NCAA Division III National Player of the Year.

Fisher began his coaching career at Samford from 1988 to 1992. He helped the squad reach the 1991 and 1992 NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS) playoffs.

After leaving Samford, Fisher worked in the Southeastern Conference as the quarterbacks coach at Auburn from 1993-98 before becoming the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Cincinnati in 1999. Fisher would return to the SEC at LSU as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator on Nick Saban’s staff helping the Tigers win the 2003 national championship in addition to two SEC titles. Fisher joined Bobby Bowden at Florida State in 2007 as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for three seasons before taking over as the head coach of the Seminoles in 2010.

Fisher led FSU to the 2013 BCS National Championship and is currently the head coach at Texas A&M University.

This is the second group of inductees into the Samford Athletics Hall of Fame. Joining Fisher this year are the 1998-99 men’s basketball team, Billy Bancroft, Craig Beard, Michael Marseco and Alyssa Whitehead.
