Close Call for Students in East TX Bus Fire

OVERTON, Texas (AP) _ Six students and three adults scrambled safely out of a school bus with a history of electrical problems shortly before a fire turned the bus into a burned-out shell.

Overton schools Superintendent Alan Umholtz says driver Kim Daniels heard noises coming from under the hood and saw engine lights flashing and evacuated the bus through the rear emergency exit. Two bus monitors were among those on board.

Tyler television station KLTV reports that Daniels had students off the bus before red smoke poured out of the hood.

Umholtz says the bus was less than a year old and had undergone numerous repairs for electrical problems.

The fire happened on County Road 1114 in Rusk County, about 120 miles southeast of Dallas.
