City Of College Station Fires A Private Contractor

The city of College Station has fired a contractor for moving too slowly on a neighborhood street and utility line project.

According to a news release, the termination involves moving too slowly on rebuilding Francis Drive between Glenhaven and Munson, a project that includes a new waterline and a renovated wastewater line.

City manager Bryan Woods says an emergency contract will be executed as soon as possible.

And there will be a neighborhood meeting to answer questions and outline the future schedule of the project.

In December 2017, the city council approved a nearly four million dollar contract to improve Francis between Glenhaven and Walton.

News release from the city of College Station:

On Thursday, the City of College Station informed Houston-based Hassell Construction Company, Inc. that it will be terminating its contract on the Francis Drive Rehabilitation Project due to a lack of substantial progress.

Phase-1 of the project — street, water line and wastewater line rehabilitation from Glenhaven Drive to Munson Drive — began in February 2018 and was expected to take approximately 18 months to complete. To date, Phase-1 is behind schedule to an unacceptable degree, causing prolonged inconvenience to all who live and travel in that area.

“An emergency contract will be executed as soon as possible that allows work from Glenhaven Drive to Shady Drive to be completed so the lives of those residents can finally return to normal,” College Station City Manager Bryan Woods said.

City crews have already been onsite to ensure affected driveways and other areas under construction are safe until a new contractor resumes work.

Woods says city staff will organize and host a neighborhood meeting in the coming weeks in order to outline next steps for the Francis Drive Rehabilitation Project and to answer any questions that residents may have.
