VICTORIA, Texas (AP) _ Texas environmental regulators are investigating the death of thousands of fish in the Victoria Barge Canal after a spill of two gallons of acetone cyanohydrin.
The chemical is used in the production of plastics, acrylics and synthetic resins.
Spokeswoman Lisa Wheeler said the state’s environmental agency was notified of the spill around midnight on Jan. 21.
Officials said between 2,000 and 5,000 fish were affected and 95 percent of the fish were mullet.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife did not release the name of the company involved.
Wheeler said the company must submit a report to the agency.
A regional biologist on the team, Alex NuInez, said the agency’s Kills and Spills team is finalizing its investigation, which should be completed in the next two weeks.
The agency advises against eating any of the dead fish.
