The Scott & White BCS Marathon raised $150,000 for three local organizations during its 3rd annual race on December 8, 2013. This year’s recipient organizations include Twin City Mission Youth and Family Services, Bryan and College Station ISD Education Foundations and the hosting organization Mercy Project.
“The race exists to help others,” said Chris Field, Race Director and Executive Director of Mercy Project. “We want to help people lead healthier lives and reach lifelong fitness goals, but even more than that, we have an opportunity to impact the lives of kids and families in our communities by supporting organizations doing exceptional work. We couldn’t imagine doing anything differently.”
In the spring of 2013, the Scott & White BCS Marathon sought organizations based in the Brazos Valley that focus on improving the lives of children. Each charity that received an award, submitted an application and detailed specific plans to utilize the funds for programs that serve the youth in the community.
Twin City Mission Youth and Family Services and to the Bryan and College Station ISD Education Foundations both received a $25,000 award from the race. All remaining proceeds benefitted Mercy Project, the hosting non-profit organization responsible for the development and execution of the marathon.
“The $25,000 will provide an opportunity to award a number of innovative grants to classroom teachers and special projects in 2014 that would not have been possible with existing funds,” said Sandra Davis, Executive Director of the Bryan ISD Education Foundation. “Having these funds could allow us to increase our awards by 40-50%.”
The impact of the partnership between the race and the recipient organizations extends beyond the monetary donation. “It also brought us together,” said Kathy Chapman, Gold Ambassador for Twin City Mission. “Our experience with the race was such a positive experience and we really enjoyed being involved and allowing some of our staff and board members see the ‘running lifestyle.’”
“Each of these three organizations does exemplary work,” said Jason Jennings, CEO, Scott & White Healthcare – College Station. “Their partnership with the race allows the reach of the Scott & White BCS Marathon to extend even further, from promoting wellness and a healthy community to improving the lives of the children in our community. We are honored to present them with proceeds from the race.”
The Scott & White BCS Marathon will begin their application process for the 2014 marathon beneficiaries in February. For more information about supporting the Scott & White BCS Marathon, please visit bcsmarathon.com/contact.
