Catanzariti Claims Second Straight SEC Freshman of the Week Honor

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M’s AJ Catanzariti was named Southeastern Conference freshman of the week for the second consecutive week, the league office announced Wednesday morning. Catanzariti helped the Aggies to a perfect 3-0 weekend over a trio of ITA ranked teams at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

Wednesday’s accolades marked the fourth time this spring a member of the No. 8 Texas A&M men’s tennis team was named SEC Freshman of the Week, Catanzariti’s doubles partner Arthur Rinderknech earned the title twice in February.

Catanzariti prevailed in three sets against Zvanomir Babib, of Ole Miss, Sunday and clinched the match over Yannick Junger of upset-minded UTSA in the last match standing. The freshman right hander is a on a personal eight match win streak, including five conference victories. Catanzariti leads the Aggies with a 12-3 dual record and 7-1 ledger in conference play.

Alongside Rinderknech clinched the doubles point to open Arkansas match, leading to 4-0 sweep of Razorbacks. The Pittsburgh native leads the Aggies with 12 dual match doubles wins, including a team-best 7-2 league mark alongside Rinderknech. Leading the potent maroon and white freshman class during the current Texas A&M six-match win streak, first-year Aggies are a perfect 10-0 in singles matches, Catanzariti paces the freshman group at 5-0 in that span.

Catanzariti and rest of the No. 8 Aggies travel to Houston to take on No. 48 Rice Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. at the brand-new George R. Brown Tennis Center. Following the midweek trip the Aggies will host No. 46 Auburn for their final regular season home contest. A&M’s four seniors will be honored prior to Friday night’s match; Jeremy Efferding, Max Montague, Jordan Szabo and Jackson Withrow.
