Capping Texas A&M Enrollment Discussed By The Board of Regents

The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents was told this week this fall’s freshmen enrollment at the flagship campus is projected to equal last year’s record.

That began an extended discussion on the question whether enrollment should be capped.

President Michael Young, who said A&M is the only state supported flagship school without a cap, told the regents the goal should be finding students an “optimal education”, even if it’s not at the flagship campus.

Chancellor John Sharp called for a closer partnership between the flagship and other system campuses, suggesting students could start somewhere else and transfer to College Station.

Regent Bob Albritton of Fort Worth said politically, it would be tough to put an enrollment limit at a state-funded school.
