Years in the making, the joint landfill operation involving the cities of College Station and Bryan became official Monday afternoon.
A joint meeting at College Station City Hall was the setting where the respective city councils and the board of BVSWMA, the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management Agency, finalized paperwork. BVSWMA has operating authority with oversight by the respective councils with shared employees and equipment signed over from both cities. Both councils also dismissed a lawsuit against the City of College Station, filed over a year ago by the City of Bryan. College Station City Councilman Dennis Maloney was the only person to not support the agreement. Maloney abstained from all motions.
Earlier in the day the councils, city staffs, and BVSWMA officials hit the streets and highways checking out the facilities. That included the soon to open Twin Oaks landfill, the soon to close Rock Prairie landfill, Bryan’s compost facility, and the recycling center and big dumpster in College Station.
